Nowa książka o Polakach w Australii

W Polsce w lipcu 2019 roku na rynku księgarskim ukazała się książka Mariana Kałuskiego o Polakach w Australii pt. „Terra Australis. Jest to książka, ktĂłra jest z pewnością ciekawym przyczynkiem do historii PolakĂłw w najdalszym od Polski kraju - w Australii, głównie jednak o powojennej emigracji. Są to rĂłwnieĹź osobiste refleksje autora o jej kondycji. Autor był redaktorem ukazującego się w Melbourne „Tygodnika Polskiego” oraz załoĹźycielem Studium Historii Polonii Australijskiej. Celem książki jest odkłamanie wielu wątkĂłw najnowszej historii PolakĂłw w Australii. Autor hołduje powiedzeniu: „Prawda ponad wszystko”. Ci, ktĂłrzy dokonywali tego zapomnieli o mądrych polskich porzekadłach: „Oliwa zawsze na wierzch wypływa” i „Nieuczciwość na krĂłtkich chodzi nogach”.

MARIAN KAŁUSKI jest dziennikarzem, pisarzem, historykiem polskim i australijskim oraz podróşnikiem (był w 90 krajach) mieszkającym w Australii od 1964 roku. Członek polskich i australijskich towarzystw i stowarzyszeń historycznych, dziennikarskich i literackich oraz Światowej Rady Badań nad Polonią w Warszawie. Autor 30 książek, m.in. Jan Paweł II. Pierwszy Polak papieĹźem (Australia 1979, USA 1980), Polskie dzieje Kijowa (Toruń 2015), Polskie Wilno 1919-1939 (Toruń 2019) oraz 4-tomowej pracy (razem 2812 stron) Sprawy kresowe – bez cenzury (Toruń 2017-2018), ktĂłra jest jak gdyby „Biblią kresową”. MARIAN KALUSKI was born in Chelmno in Poland on 2nd February 1946. He has lived and worked in Australia since 1964. He is a journalist and writer, Polish and Australian historian, and a traveller who has visited 90 countries. He has cooperated with 63 papers, publishing both in Polish (37) and English (26), in Australia, Poland, England, France (“Kultura”), the USA, and Canada and in the electronic media (including “Wirtualna Polska”, “PAP – Polonia dla Polonii”, “KWORUM PolskoPolonijna Gazeta Internetowa). In the years 1974-77, he was the editor of the “Polish Weekly” in Melbourne. Together with Dr. Z. Stelmach he was instrumental in saving the paper from liquidation in 1974. The paper is still being printed today and is the only remaining Polish weekly in Australia. He was also the editor of the periodicals “Merkuriusz Ziem Wschodnich Rzeczypospolitej” and two bulletins for the Polish communities in Ardeer and Albion. In 1979-89, he worked with the Polish programme on 2EA Radio (currently SBS) in Sydney. Marian Kaluski is the author of 30 books and a number of scholarly essays published in Polish and English in Australia, England, the USA and Poland. Among

his books and works in English are: “Sir Paul E. Strzelecki. The man who climbed and named Mt. Kosciusko” (Melbourne 1981), “Poles in Maitland” (Maitland 1983), “The Poles in Australia” (AE Press, Melbourne 1985), “Sir Paul E. Strzelecki. A Polish Count’s Explorations in 19th Century Australia” (AE Press, Melbourne 1985). His essays include: “Poles in Victoria’s History” („Journal” Royal Historical Society in Victoria, 1986), “Polish Religious Life in Australia” (Melbourne 1988), “Polish Press in Australia” (Melbourne 1989), about the battle and the Polish War Cemetery in Monte Cassino in the work titled “Ukraiński zamach na Polskie Sanktuarium Narodowe pod Monte Cassino” (London 1989), “Racism which is taboo in Australia” (Melbourne 1990), “Polish Community and Sporting Centre in Albion (Melbourne) 1984-2009” (Toruń, Poland 2010). Books in Polish are: two biographies of John Paul II (Australia 1979 and USA 1980), about socialism and Polish socialism (Melbourne 1982), “Polacy w Maitland” (1983), a history of the 600 years of Christianity in Lithuania (London 1987) and a monograph of the city of Gdansk in Poland (2004) and Polish Wilno in the years 1919-1939 (2019), five books devoted to Polish-Jewish relations (1990, 2000 – two books, 2001, 2018), two books about the history of the Polish people in China (2001 and 2004) and the first ever published major books devoted to the Polish people in New Zealand (2006) and India (2017), two books about the relationship and ties between Poland and Italy and its peoples over the last 1000 years (2016, 2017), a book about the history Polish Club’s history in Albion (2010), a book about Polish Catholic life in Australia (2010), a book about the Polish contribution to the history of the Ukrainian capital city of Kiev (2015) as well as four volume (2812 pages) of Polish history of the Eastern of the Eastern Provinces of Poland that were annexed to the Soviet Union by Stalin in 1945. In 2007 Polonicum Machindex Institut in Switzerland published his first e-book – CD ROM “Śladami PolakĂłw po świecie” containing 117 essays about the Polish people in 52 countries, including Australia (23 essays). The history of the Polish people in some of these countries were the first ever compiled. Marian Kaluski also has authored many numerous essays and articles in Polish published in the Polish academic publications “Studia Polonijne” (KUL), “Rocznik Polonii”, “Zeszyty Chojnickie” and “Polacy i Polonia na świecie. Stan badań i ich perspektywy na XXI wiek”. No other Polish historian, both in Australia and Poland, wrote so many books, works and articles about the history of the Polish people in Australia then Marian Kaluski. This is not only the history of the Polish people but also Australian people. Marian Kaluski is the co-founder and director (since 1977) of Studium Historii Polonii Australijskiej. Upon his recommendation and as a result of two years of action, Australia Post released a stamp in 1983 commemorating the significance of Sir Paul Edmund Strzelecki in Australian history. He was also involved in the project of the building of monument of Sir Paul Edmund Strzelecki in Jindabyne which was presented to the Australian people in 1988 as a gift from Poland on the Bicentenary of Australia.

A member of the Australian Historical Society, Australian Society of Writers, Australian Journalists Association, Polish Writers’ Union, Society of Polish Journalists and the World Research Council on Poles Abroad. He has been involved in many aspects of Polish life in Australia including teaching Polish at Yarraville Polish Saturday School, secretary of the Polish Association of Ardeer and honorary member of the Polish Club in Albion. Marian Kaluski was awarded the Polish Cross of Merit by President Lech Walesa in 1991, and the Silver Medal of the Stowarzyszenie “WspĂłlnota Polska” in Warsaw (a Polish Government institution which looks after the Polish people around the world). In 1986, he was granted a Vatican commemorative medal on the occasion of Pope John Paul II pilgrimage to Australia. In 2015 he was presented with Cross of the Remembrance of the Genocide of the Polish People in World War II for his articles on the subject. In 2018 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the gaining of Poland independence Marian Kaluski was awarded his greatest honour the Order of Cross of Polonia by the World Research Council on Poles Abroad in Warsaw for his contribution to the Polish immigration studies and culture abroad.
